Last week went to Yellowstone with my family...we had a great time, but I wasn't able to run.

Workout today, 45 minute tempo run.  5 minute warm up 35 minutes at 1% incline 6.8 speed. 5 minute cool down.

I feel that I am starting to improve....cant wait to find my mojo

AWESOME!!!

We are leaving for Yellowstone on Thursday. Any fun suggestions for our family???

From Kimmy on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 13:21:13 from 71.37.75.245

Kathie

Yes, my mojo is just around the corner, but it is still to fast...I cant catch it.

Teena

I really liked the upper and lower falls. The girls liked seeing all the hot pots and old faithful. Just after fishing bridge is where we saw tons of bison. However, make sure you go there towards the end of the day (when it is cool) or the bison are sleeping in the trees. It is a good time to go because the bison are in the rutt and you might see some fights going on (or other x-rated things). We only spent 1 day in the park and I know there are a lot of fun hikes to go on. I would take the time to ask at one of the visitor centers. Also, if you go into West Yellowstone eat at the Running Bear for breakfast it was real good.

From Kimmy on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 13:24:52 from 71.37.75.245

Teena

On the way home we stopped in Bear World (just 5 miles south of Rexburge)the girls had a blast. It costs about 70.00 for a car load you drive through the park and can see bear. If you are lucky they will come right up to your car. Then there is a petting zoo. We spent about 1 1/2 hours there gave the girls a chance to see the bear since we didn't see any in yellowstone.

From Smooth on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 16:18:20 from 71.35.210.115

Yellowstone is one of our favorite vacation spots. We always go to one of the corner stores in the Park for some frozen treats.

Kimmy ~ NICE tempo run! Your mojo is too fast because you ARE FAST! Can't wait to see you at Spanish Fork 1/2. :-)

From DonGardinero on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 20:55:16 from 152.216.7.5

Kimmy, your Yellowstone trip sounds exactly like ours a couple of months ago. We only spent a day in the park and we also saw the upper and lower falls and we even spent a couple of hours at Bear World. Good stuff.

Could only get 7 miles in.  I was suppose to do 10.  I think it might be that I mowed the lawn in the heat and it wiped me out.  I just did one of the programs on the treadmill and felt weak the whole run.  Oh well, there is always tomorrow!!!!!

From Smooth on Wed, Aug 12, 2009 at 00:35:13 from 71.35.210.115

Mowing the lawn in the heat count as a 5K at the least. So there you got your 10 in! Such a hard working girl!!!

Comments
From Rhett on Thu, Aug 13, 2009 at 12:58:34 from 74.32.218.69

Tell me about the speed program. Does it switch back and forth between a preset fast and slow pace? Do you have to press a button to make the switch or is it done by time? Glad you felt better than the day before.

From Kimmy on Thu, Aug 13, 2009 at 17:04:44 from 71.37.75.245

Rhett...My speed will range from 6.2 to a 7.0 (slow speed work) and it changes every minute. The program is called a speed workout, but the fastest you can go is 7.0. Not much of a speed workout, but it doesn't get boring because I am changing every minute.

If I am doing a true speed workout, I will do it manually rather than running one of the treadmill programs because then I can adjust me speed highter than 7.0

From DonGardinero on Thu, Aug 13, 2009 at 17:08:21 from 75.162.164.187

That's pretty cool. I should really learn to program my treadmill.

NICE TM run! Glad you're feeling better.

My TM has 10 pre-set programs. I like how it changes elevation and speed automatically. I do have to increase the speed on most of them though.

What a crazy day!!!!  Took my cat in to get his leg checked (It took me over 1 hour to get him in the car carrier) and 250.00 later I had my cat back.  Last night was very interesting.  The cat was not liking being in the house and he hated the wrap they had put on his leg.

I started to run and was 3 miles into the run when my daughter came down to inform me he had shook his wrap off.  I had to deal with that and by the time we got everything taken care of I wasn't in the mood for running.  Then the night came.  He stayed in the mud room and we put his little "Cone" on his head.  If you thought the wrap bugged him, the cone was even worse.  He cried all night long.  At 4:00 in the morining I was walking him around the yard trying to get him to go the bathroom....NO LUCK....  Came back in the house and let him sleep with me, but the whole time he was meowing I ended up puting him in the mud room and tryed to get some sleep.

Woke up this morining and he had the wrap off again....2nd time of trying to wrap him up.  I used duck tape this time and knew he wouldn't get out.  Told my daughter she had to stay home to babysit him.  She was not happy.  Also informed her to take him outside to let him go the bathroom....TO LATE!!!... he found a nice spot to poop, right on my running blanket and he got his wrap off AGAIN.

This time it was not coming off.  I grabbed an ace wrap and wrapped it around his stomach and down his leg and then used duck tape to keep it all in place.  If he gets this off, I am going to die.  He has had it on for about 1 hour now so things are looking good.

Long report for just 3 miles....I was feeling good and wished I could have finished my workout.

Came home and decided to try and get another run in.  My husband had left to go hunting which left me home with my daughter.  I ended up taking my daughter and her 3 friends with me (they were riding bikes).  I wanted to go 10 miles, but by the time we got everyone ready and headed out I could only get 6 in before it go dark.  It was very interesting going with all the girls.  My average pace was 8:53, and I felt real good on the run.

I liking running with my daughter because it changes things up. I find that I am thinking about her more than if I am hurting or not. I usually run better having her with me.

I really do not like this work out, but it is over!!!. Turned on the TV to the UFC fights and hoped it would keep my mind off my pain while I watched two grown men beat each other up. Ran a 1/2 mile warm up then did 7x800. set the treadmill to a 1% incline 7.9. I was in quite a bit of pain but I finished it. Finished off with a 1/2 mile cool down. I hope this is all worth it!!!

Okay ... so what happened with the fight?

From Kimmy on Tue, Aug 18, 2009 at 00:09:25 from 75.169.115.44

To be honest I was so concerned about how much time I had left I really couldn't tell you much about the fight. I do know in one fight the guy was hit once and was out cold. The other fights are all a blur to me.

I think I will stick with my NCIS

From Teena on Tue, Aug 18, 2009 at 00:16:44 from 67.177.20.13

From Huans32 on Tue, Aug 18, 2009 at 11:05:47 from 138.64.2.76

OK...I found something worse than UFC to watch.  I spent the hour and watch Big Brother (11 or 12) I can't remember.  Oh My HECK is this for real....the thing that scares me is I am assuming the 11 or 12 means how many seasons they have had.  Do people really watch this.  Anyway, I was so amazed with the show I actually ahd a good run.

1 mile warm up and then I did a hill program on the treadmill with a 1 mile cool down.  Felt pretty good.  I have noticed that I always struggle with hills during a race so I thought I had better start working on them more often.

How are you feeling today? Are you getting geared up for the big race on Saturday?

From MarcE on Thu, Aug 20, 2009 at 22:11:22 from 24.155.140.8

I was in England a few years ago, and their "Big Brother" is on one channel all night long...you get to watch everyone sleeping--I'm pretty sure it was live. I haven't watch "Big Brother" in a few years..our family is hooked on "America's Got Talent" at the moment. There's 5 sisters from Utah (Morgan) on there now that are really impressive...

...oh and nice workout!

From Kimmy on Fri, Aug 21, 2009 at 10:27:57 from 71.38.229.92

Rhett...My legs are feeling tired, but I think by Saturday they should be fine. I have no idea what to expect on Sat. It has been so long since I have been in any kind of shape to push myself. A PR would be nice, but we will see. I just hope I can hang with Kathie until the last mile or two.

Marc..My husband is hooked on "Americas got talent" I get to watch every once in a while. I have seen the girls from Utah and they are pretty fun to watch, I have to admit I liked the "stomp" group a little better or maybe they were called "feet" I am not for sure.

I am so excited to see you and Kathie tomorrow!!! I feel like I haven't seen you two forever - you always make me laugh so hard!!! Can hardly wait.

Have a great race tomorrow. You are going to kick some major trash!!!

Love ya!

Teena....You are always welcome to sleep over. You will have to fight Kathie for the queen bed...My bet is on Kathie (I grew up with her and I know she can fight), you would have to sleep on the twin bed in the toy room...bonus you can play Bratz all night!!!!

This run was possible because of Rhett.  I kept saying to myself (from mile 6 to 13), Rhett told me when I wanted to quit, not to and keep running.  I kept repeating this for 7 miles and it got me through this race.  This run went a lot better than I had ever thought.  Kathie and I took the first 6 pretty fast.  Figured we would try and get ahead of our time on the down hill and then hold onto the end.  Kathie and I kept hitting the wall at different points.  When I hit the wall Kathie ran ahead and I just kept watching her and soon pulled her in.  Then it was my turn to pull ahead and within a couple of miles Kathie was able to pull back even with me.  Again, Kathie pulled ahead and I wasn't able to catch her until the last .2.  We were able to finish together and both with a PR time.  1:48:12 (Garmine time, not official time), beat my last PR by 5 minutes.  I was please with the race and it has really helped my confidence.

We have SF 1/2 to look forward  to, but this run is for run and not time.  It will be nice to just enjoy the run and being with Kathie.

Splits: 8:13,8:00,8:28,7:49 (with Potty break),8:02, 7:57,8:37,8:29,8:30,9:30 (had to walk a hill),8:35,8:48,7:35

Very pleased that all but two miles were faster than marathon race pace.

Wow! A 5 min PR is huge!!!! I was just being silly when I posted my message, but I'm glad my silliness helped in a small way. You showed how mentally tough you are, by continuing to push when you wanted to quit. Congrats on a great race.

From MarcE on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 19:07:51 from 24.155.140.8

Amazing, simply amazing...how did you possibly run a 7:49 with a potty stop!?

Seriously, sounds like you and Kathie both did great. Congrats on the PR and for pushing eachother. :)

From Kimmy on Sun, Aug 23, 2009 at 19:24:10 from 75.169.121.183

Marc...Kathie doesn't waste any time in the POP also it was a very down hill section. kathie and I tried to push really hard on all of the down hills.

Rhett..Joking or not your message helped both kathie and I. She kept telling herself that she didn't want Rhett to be right. It helped get her through some tough times.

7xhill workout. 1/2 mile warm up and 1/2 mile cool down. 6.5% incline 6.0 speed. I would run a 1/4 mile up then set the incline on 0.0 and run a 1/4 down. Felt good other than my legs were still a little sore from the race on saturday. Seemed to struggle a few times but was able to push through it.

Sorry you did these... I thought about doing them. The up hill wouldn't have killed me as much as the down, so you were right to do them on the treadmill.

NICE mileage and pace! Your running is so light and effortless, I doubt you could scare the lambs! Some dogs are really dumb! You're such an animal lover. GOOD JOB!

From Kimmy on Wed, Aug 26, 2009 at 15:51:57 from 65.48.64.14

I wouldn't have stopped, but I could tell one of the girls was having a hard time with her lamb. I was afraid if I came running up it would only get worse.

From Rhett on Wed, Aug 26, 2009 at 16:20:16 from 74.32.212.114

So do they walk the lambs on leashes? Is there a lamb leash law?

From Kimmy on Wed, Aug 26, 2009 at 16:29:16 from 65.48.64.14

Yes, they do walk them on Leashes and about the law....I have no clue? But I haven't figured out all of the Spanish Fork laws.

From Kathie on Wed, Aug 26, 2009 at 18:56:19 from 207.155.176.10

Yes Spanish Fork is its own little world! Nice splits on the run.

Are you going to try and do tomorrows run at Marathon Pace? I am not sure if I am healed enough to do that pace or not.

From Kimmy on Wed, Aug 26, 2009 at 19:29:49 from 65.48.64.14

No...I am just going to try and get a good run in. I am going to have to run when it is hot and I think it will take too much out of me to run Marathon pace. We will just run 10 miles faster on Saturday :)

Got up early to try and get my run in.  I ran two miles on the treadmill at a 9:13 pace and then changed to the bike.  I rode for 40 minutes.  I put 6 miles down because in the 1 hour I was working out I would have gone close to 6 miles running.  I think my body needed a break from running.  The two miles on the treadmill seemed like 10.

Plan on going out to eat with the hubby and daughter.  My husband just turned 45...I would lie and tell you I am much younger than him, but you can't lie to runners because you know my BQ time...therefore you know my age division :)

YAY for working out early and get the miles in! GOOD JOB!

Of course you can lie about your age. Don't you know that runners are the biggest liars? We tell ourselves lies all the time to get through a tough run. I made all kinds of promises, like: I'll never run another marathon again!

CONGRATS to your hubby just entering a new AG! Hope you have a wonderfully fabulous dinner tonight. :)

From Kimmy on Thu, Aug 27, 2009 at 22:51:33 from 75.169.125.90

From MarcE on Thu, Aug 27, 2009 at 23:29:43 from 24.155.140.8

First of all I want to say THANK YOU to kathie. She was my pack horse. I forgot my fuel belt and so she carried my water, gu and whatever else needed. She is a GREAT!!!! Sister.

My legs were not as tired as Kathies. I had missed two training runs due to schedule issues...don't get me wrong...I was tired, but I didn't feel as drained until mile 16 or so. Kathie had also lifted very hard the day before. Kathie is the type not to complain, I didn't realize she was so tired until really late in the run. I wish I could endure pain like she can.

With all that said. I felt good about the run. I wish I felt stronger at the end, but we still have one more 20 before SGM to push and get our body ready for 26.2.

Really enjoyed seeing Smooth on this run. She looked so happy and SMOOTH, FAST and STRONG. She can lighten your spirits by just a simply Hi and a HUG.

Right after the run, I had a swim party planned with my Primary class, I hurried home to get ready for that. Had a fun time, but I am ready for a little nap!!!!

Where is the race report???

Race: Spanish Fork 1/2 (13.1 Miles) 01:56:00
Total Distance
13.10

Teena here is the report...Sorry it was late, but McKenna has a big project due on Wed. and I had to spend the day getting it done.

Had Kathie and my Mom sleep over, we had fun just talking and going over the game plan for the next day.  I took my mom out that night and showed her the course so she could prepare how she was going to run.

We planned on getting up around 5:30, but my husband went hunting at 5:00 so I was up then.  I stayed in bed and tried to sleep, but not much of that.

Kathie and I had talked and decided to run this race in 1:59.  Our goal was to break 2 hours.  We knew it was going to be a tough course, so we decided just to run as a good training run.

We saw smooth and Maynard at the start and lined up with Smooth with the idea to stay with her.  Boy she flew out of the shoot and Kathie and I didn't want to start with a pace like that.  We kept her in our sights until about mile 6 when she really pulled away at the hill.  She had a great run.

I felt pretty good on this run.  Could really feel the hills and wish I could have handled them a little better.  About mile 10 I stopped a girl with the number "2".  I decided I was going to catch her.  Started to get closer and closer.  By mile 12 I had finally caught her and thought I could lose her and start making some distance.  However, she had something different in mind.  I could hear her right behind me the whole last mile.  with about .2 left I decided to pick up the pace to try and pull away.  We started to get closer to the finish and she had a lot of family cheering her on. I could she was close by the way they were yelling.  With the finish in sight I caught a glimps of her trying to sprint by.  I put it in 2nd gear and sprinted to the end to hold her off.  She looked at me and told me thanks for pushing her to the end and I returned the thanks to her.

I think the run went very well, but didn't give me the confidence I was looking for to help me BQ at SGM.  I was hoping that a 2 hour pace would have felt easier.

After the race Kathie, Mom, Maynard and I tried to win some fun prizes.  I won some socks and my mom won a new Cool Pix Camera.  I swear she is one lucky woman.

As a side note.  My mom took first in her age group (she was the only one who ran), but she would have taken 1st in the age group below her and 3rd in the group below that.  She has really done well with her 5K's

I hope I don't end up regretting what I did today.  I decided that since I was able to run my TM workout without stopping I should try the same program and move it up.  Well, I was able to finish the program, but my legs felt like jello.  I am hoping they stop hurting by tomorrow.  My 20 miler may be interesting...Lets you know tomorrow how it goes

I hope the 20 miler went well. I think Kathie is finally learning that you have to take easy days in oreder to make the important days count, are you?

From Smooth on Sat, Sep 12, 2009 at 17:43:30 from 71.32.238.75

Running on jello-legs makes you stronger. It simulates what it feels to run the last 10K of the marathon. You will have fresh legs on marathon day and the magic of SGM to carry you to a triumphant finish!

OK....I am trying to decided what to eat the day of the big race.  I got up this morning and had a banana and some yogurt.  I never got sick, but the sweetness of the banana and the yogurt made it so when I tried to eat my gu I started to throw up.  I was able to force my body to take one.  I had a hard time drinking any gatorade, because the thought of putting anything sweet in my body would make me sick.  I did bring oranges up and at mile 16 ate (drank) the juice from 4 of them.  They really saved me.  I still need to decide what to do the day of the race.  I can say that after the run I did not get sick....was very tired from getting up at 4:30, but I was not sick.

The run went OK.  I was really glad kathie was there, because she was pushing the pace today.  I know if I was on my own it would have been A LOT slower.  My Jello legs were very tired.  I could feel every little hill.  I also had another thing happen that I can't explain.  My breathing was very labored.  I didn't feel like I was tired, but if you listened to me breath you would have thougth I was dying.  At one point Kathie stopped to walk because she thought my breathing was so bad.  I can't explain it.  I have had a little sore throat for a couple of day.....but I wouldn't say I am sick.

Anyway, my splits were:  9:15, 8:56, 9:01; 9:25; 9:03; 9:34; 9:38; 9:02; 10:08; 9:16; 9:05; 9:02; 9:16; 9:04; 9:06; 9:15; 9:04; 9:04; 9:09; 10:16

It was really great that we saw Teena today, she looked so strong.  If she was stuggling she didn't show it.  What a great runner!!!!

Very nice job, Kimmy. I bet you two have a lot of fun when you run together. So cool that you ran into Teena.

From Teena on Sat, Sep 12, 2009 at 22:23:16 from 67.177.20.13

Oh Kimmy!!! You crack me up!!! I was struggling and it was evident. But how super super super nice of you to say otherwise.

You and Kathie, on the other hand, looked absolutely beautiful. Seriously, I was looking at you both and wondering how in the world you both looked so stylish in your cute running outfits and everything. You girls are something else!!

Guess what I had before the run!!! Bread with nutella!!! So bad for me, but it tasted so good!! :) I think I do best with toast, jam, and laughing cow cheese. Sounds disgusting, but it is dang good!!!

Love you!!

You had a FANTASTIC run!!! Can't believe you were able to do that after your hillwork yesterday.

From Smooth on Sun, Sep 13, 2009 at 00:09:49 from 71.32.238.75

Kimmy!!! I want jello-legs like yours if they bust out those kinda pace. Sounds like a great fun run with Kathie. HOW FUN to run into Teena! I'm so glad you girls ran the JRP instead of fighting the brutal headwind and uphill in Provo Canyon.

Guess what I eat every morning before my run, you guess it, yogurt for short run, yogurt and banana for longer run. Today I did not drink any Gatorade. I drank only water two weeks ago in the Provo Canyon and felt great. Gatorade is too sweet for me and sometimes gave me upset stomach. Today I drank water and use Enlyten electrolyte strips (Kathie's neighbor is the dealer). Anyway, I may do just that at SGM. I take Gu every 45-60 min. in the marathon. By mile 23, the only thing I could stomach is the juice from orange slices they give out at the aid station.

Do you have allergy? The breathing might be a little bit of the allergens in the air or a mild case of exercise induced asthma? You symptoms sound more like constricted airway than shortness of breath. Anyhow, great job getting the final long run done, great pace and effort. Looking forward to see you BQ at SGM. YAY!!!!

Kathie was able to tell you a story so I am going to tell you mine.  I came home from work and my husband had bought chip and salsa....I love chips and salsa.  I took the next 1/2 hour and had my fill of chips and salsa.  Then decided to go run.....let me tell you chips and salsa DO NOT taste as good while you run......

Anyway, my workout today was hill repeats.  I did 6 at a 5% incline 6.5 speed.  I would run "up" the hill for a 1/4 of a mile and then turn the incline to a 0% and run "down" the hill for a 1/4 of a mile.  Felt pretty good, the last one was the only one that I did the clock watch and was wishing it would hurry up.  I started off with a 1 mile warm up and a 1 mile cool down.

Don't listen to Kathie..the weather is going to be perfect at SGM! 40 at the start 70 at the finish, no rain, clear sky before the sun comes up, then partly cloudy, 15 MPH wind from the North. (That's what I'm predicting anyways)

Teena and Smooth....thanks for checking in. I am feeling great. I decided not to run at all this week. It has been hard. I feel very anxious to get out and stretch the legs. I am tossing the idea around about trying to BQ at Ogden. What do you two think of that?

From Smooth on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 10:37:49 from 174.23.240.142

Kimmy,

That is a GREAT idea! You've run that course before (at least the half) if I remember right. You will do fantastic there. Recover fully the next few weeks, no hardcore training, keep the fitness up by xtrain. Then train through the winter. I have used Hal Higdon's Intermediate II and Pfitz's Advanced Marathoning to train through the winter and BQ in Boston.

You were SO SO SO SO very close to BQ last Sat. You have it in you. Let me know what I can do to help. We're gonna get you to Boston this time!

From Kimmy on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 10:56:25 from 71.38.229.92

Smooth...tell me what you did to prepare for the downhill of Ogden (didn't you do the full last year?) I think that is what really killed me. My legs were jello by 19.

From Smooth on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 11:33:17 from 174.23.240.142

Yes, I ran the full in '07, '08 & '09. My legs cramped up on the trail portion. That Canyon could trash your legs. To be honest with you, I haven't figured out how to run a true negative split. Pron8r always says that we have to treat Ogden's half at 18 not at 13.1. I thought I went out slow running with Robw8 keeping the pace at 10mm this year; took the downhill and paid for it on Grant St. Perhaps it was the warm temp. In my opinion, the race start at 7 is too late and in May it gets warm fast at the finish.

I think you have the right idea of doing lotsa hills the next training cycle. In 2008, I raced Boston (3:57) then raced Ogden (3:59) 26 days later. I attributed it to lotsa hill running in preparation for Boston that year.

I think downhill running is "controlled fall". I'd practice running downhill 1) with my hands at below waist closer to hips. I notice when children run downhill, they flap their hands by the sides to keep the balance. They have no fear of falling so they just fly. Adult's instinct with steep downhill is to put on the brake with over striding. This is what I try to practice when running downhill:

2) Shorter stride so your feet land directly under your hip. NO feet slapping. Just little pitter-patter.

3) Lean ever slightly forward at the ankle. Keeping the torso straight and perpendicular to the hill. Imagine a skier at the gate how his body is leaning forward. Let the gravity take you with quicker cadence/turnovers.

Hope this help. I watched you running at SGM. You have EXCELLENT running form with a NICE kick. So you probably already know how to run downhill. Kathie does alot of quad strengthening workouts. I think she has iron quads and calves. She can show you some stuff to fortify your awesome downhill legs.

thanks smooth. The information is great. I have to figure out how to run the marathon so I still have some gas in the tank at the end. It seems that I always die around mile 23 (this year 21) I usually push hard the first 6 miles so I can have extra time at the end for when I die. But, do I die at the end because I usually push harder at the first. I think if I try and do Ogden I am going to try and stay right on my splits and run an even race and see how that works.

I would like to add just a little bit with the hill training. Be it downhill or uphill. Try to train and run it relaxed. If going down hill. You dont run it too fast that your stride is over and your trying the breaks on. I have just found a relaxed state in there somewhere. And for the uphills too. Staying relaxed and listening to your body(breathing, and feet noises) helps to keep you not pushing to hard.

Kimmy you did awesome in SG. And its good to see you found out what you need to improve on next run. Ogden is a great race to go for a BQ at. Those rolling hills and mean hill at 14 you have to train for. Along with the speedy downhills. We got this thing.

From Huans32 on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 11:55:09 from 138.64.2.76

I dont think you can run a even split there at all and be successful. There is to many fast miles coming downhill and those uphills would just leave you dead by the end of you tried to maintain MP going up them. Look at the course tool option in your blog setup area. And then look for Ogden full. It has a good pace chart there you can plug in for you time. I followed it this last year for a 3:30 and hit them very well up till mile 17-9 I think this year. Which I was quite happy with. I just wasn't at a 8:00 pace at that time.

From Kimmy on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 12:03:54 from 71.38.229.92

Thanks mark for the info. I will looke into that pace chart. So what is the elevation for the first 13. I know the killer hill at 14, but what is before that?

I have looked at the elevation chart on the Ogden's web site, but that really doesn't tell you what to expect on the course. Everyone says that St. george is all downhill until you run it :)

I'm with Mark...use the course tool for the pace and mile splits. I didn't do that. I ran an even pace 'till the dam. I pretty much paced a group of runners this year. It was fun...but I don't recommend it. I think it's possible to do negative split in Ogden because the first few miles are gentle downhill. Save your legs till you hit the canyon. The trail portion takes focus. Keep your fuel/hydration plan well so your mind stays sharp on that trail where there are walkers/runners/relay people and families crowding it up. The last 5K is always tough in ANY marathon. If you got that master and figure out, send it my way!

Kimmy, there are no uphill that I can remember before mile 14.

From Huans32 on Fri, Oct 09, 2009 at 12:32:47 from 138.64.2.76

Oh there is rollers all around the lake. I ran the Striders half which is a nice series building up to Ogden. Or so they say. I have only did the half which is most of the first half of the marathon. And after you get out of the canyon you have rolling hills. The first time I ran it in the Striders race I found them to be mountians and walked them. Mostly due to the fact that I was running way to fast downhill for the first 6 and then died on those rollers. But when I ran them a month and a half later with Fly and Jeff they weren't nothing since I paced it right with Fly. The point is simply that just like SG. You have to train both uphill and downhill. Yes both are mostly downhill but you got to train the uphills and run then without killing yourself to make up for them going faster on the downhills.

Ogden half is a great looking course so you really have alot of knowledge of it and know what to expect. Those rollers are really unnoticiable if you have trained and ran the first 6 miles right. And then run it right to the dam. Just have to train for it and you will get it. You are so stinkin close. If I dont end up doing CIM or that Mesquite marathon here in the next month or 2 I will be going for a BQ too at Ogden.

Kimmy,

I was just going through your training runs. Here's my two cents: instead of running 20 miles three weeks before the marathon, run 22 miles. Seriously. I think that will help with the endurance towards the end of the race.

Also, perhaps there is a better race for you to BQ at even before Ogden. I think you are ready if you can get your body to fully recover fairly quickly now.

I don't know ... just my thoughts.

But yes, I do think you could qualify at Ogden if that is what you choose to do.

LOVE YOU!

Ok I know you are back from California so are you ever going to post again?

From Kimmy on Thu, Oct 22, 2009 at 13:17:56 from 71.38.229.92

Smooth and Kathie....thanks for checking up on me. Yes, I will start posting as soon as my life gives me a little time. I have been running, but not enough to really talk about. Maybe 3 or 4 miles here and there. I plan on trying to get into a good routine next week.

Glad you're still running.

Ogden would be a good race to BQ at, but maybe even Utah Valley Marathon in June. They've changed the course and it should be a lot better this year. Check it out at www.runuv.com. I'm going to run that one.
